More new users on your website is more potential new customers on your website – either who will buy directly from you then and there, or who you can remarket to them through newsletters or lead ads.

But what are the different types of website traffic and how can you boost them? Below are the key types as categorised by Google Analytics (a web analytics service offered by Google that tracks and reports website traffic. As of 2019, Google Analytics was the most widely used web analytics service on the web).

You’ll notice that most marketing activities have several benefits that will boost various types of traffic.

  1. Organic Search – users searching and finding you via search engines (using key words (e.g. Sicilian restaurant London), or your business name). SEO & brand awareness are the biggest drivers here (think PR, social media posts and advertising).

How to boost:

  • Make sure you’re subscribed to Google’s free products (like Google Marketing) – that way Google will like your website more (Google is the best search engine with a worldwide market share between 81.5% and 92.96%) (SEO)
  • Make sure your on-site SEO is up to scratch (regular blogs with key words, an SSL certificate so Google knows you aren’t dodgy, plenty of pages with plenty of content etc) (SEO)
  • PR – reaching out to journalists to secure online backlinks (SEO and brand awareness) and print press (brand awareness)
  • Directories – add yourself to as many directories as you can to ensure online backlinks (SEO)
  • Social media traffic ads – more people seeing your ads and learning about you (brand awareness)
  • Social media content – more people seeing your social media posts and learning about you (brand awareness)
  • Direct – users typing your website address directly into the search bar. As above, brand awareness is the biggest driver here (think PR, social media posts and advertising).

How to boost:

  • PR – reaching out to journalists to secure online backlinks (SEO and brand awareness) and print press (brand awareness)
  • Social media traffic ads – more people seeing your ads and learning about you (brand awareness)
  • Social media content – more people seeing your social media posts and learning about you (brand awareness)
  • Referral – users clicking through to your website via a link on another site. Online press will generate backlinks, as will backlinks created using off-site SEO efforts (directories etc.).

How to boost:

  • PR – reaching out to journalists to secure online backlinks (clicks through to your website)
  • Directories – add yourself to as many directories as you can to ensure online back links (clicks through to your website)
  • Newsletters – by having links through out the newsletter to your website (clicks through to your website)
  • Social media – users clicking through to your website via a link on social media platforms. Social media advertising is the biggest driver, and then social media posts.

How to boost:

  • Social media traffic ads – (clicks through to your website)
  • Social media content – (clicks through to your website)
