Data is one of the most important parts of running a website – knowing what’s popular, knowing what isn’t, and knowing what you can do to change those things.
Knowing all of this important stuff is only really possible with analytical data. Arguably the best way to track your site’s data is with Google Analytics – the gold standard really. And with this very short and sweet guide, we’ll show you just how easy it is to set up your own Google Analytics account so you can make the most of your website.
1. Make Analytics account – head over to the Google Analytics website and click sign up. You’ll be taken to a new page where you will have to fill out your name, details and website details, as well as your website’s category and time zone. After you’ve done that you will be given a tracking ID number and a piece of tracking code.
2. Install the tracking ID – now that you have your tracking ID, your next step really depends on your personal situation.
a. If you have a website developer – send them both the tracking ID and the tracking code so they can put this into the backend of your website. Ask them to set up ‘conversion’ goals while they’re at it – these will show you how many people are clicking on your enquiry pages such as phone numbers, email addresses, and filling in forms. Essential for tracking the success of a campaign!
b. If you manage your own Wix website (or similar) – it’s pretty easy to install a tracking ID on a Wix website. There are many guides on the Wix help page that you can follow, but you can always reach out to us for help if you need!
3. Confirmation – once the tracking ID has been installed, head back to the Google Analytics page to confirm that everything is operating as it should be. It may take a day for the data to fully populate, but if you go onto the ‘home’ page – you’ll see a real time report of who’s on your website. If it says ‘0’, open up your website on a separate tap and check if it updates to say ‘1’. If it does, you’re all good to go!
